Repent & Believe the Good News
Mark 1:14-15
Jesus calls us to "Repent and believe the good news!"
Acts 2:22-24, 29-41
Do you know why Acts 2 is a significant chapter in the Bible?
Acts 2 is significant because it marks the first time salvation is preached in Jesus's name after His death, resurrection and ascension!
Jesus is "Exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out . . . . "
Peter uses the "keys to the kingdom" (Matthew 16:19) to teach how to enter the Kingdom of God!
What do you think this "cut to the heart" means? Why were they cut to the heart?
What two things does Peter tell them to do?
This study will focus on repentance and believing the good news.
What does repentance mean to you?
Repentance is translated in the New Testament from the Greek word "metanoia," which means to change (meta) your mindset/worldview (noia).
Repentance is a shift in worldview from self-centered-and-defined to King Jesus centered-and-defined.
In so doing, your allegiance shifts from self to Jesus as Lord of your life.
Luke 3:3, 7-14
What does it mean to "bear good fruit in keeping with repentance (metanoia)"?
How will giving the throne of your life to Jesus change the fruit of your life?
Why is the ax at "the root of the tree"?
Acts 26:19-21
What does it mean to "prove your repentance by your deeds"?
Why would that cause the Jews (religious people) to persecute Him?
Are you ready to repent and prove your repentance by your deeds? How will that look?
2 Corinthians 7:8-11
What are the two types of sorrow discussed in this passage? What is the difference between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow?
What role does godly sorrow play in repentance?
Look at each of the characteristics that godly sorrow produces; how could they aid you in repenting?
Do you have godly sorrow about your sin?
Romans 10:9-10
Confessing "Jesus is Lord" is declaring your faith/allegiance to Him as King!
The Greek word "pistis" can be translated "faith, allegiance, loyalty."
Faith is more than belief. It is better understood as allegiance . . . .
1. Trust in work and person of Jesus Christ.
2. Embody allegiance to Jesus.
3. Enact allegiance.
Processing:
-Have you had a moment of repentance and belief in your life? Did it bear fruit?
-What has had your primary allegiance up to this point in your life? What fruit has it born?
-How do you think repentance and faith/allegiance repairs the Four Broken Relationships?
Assignment:
God is inviting you to repent and pledge allegiance to Jesus as Lord and Messiah!
-Spend time prayerfully reflecting and journaling the changes you think repentance and allegiance will require.
-Pray for the courage and faith to begin to live out your allegiance!
